YAKIMA — Stellar pitching by Dalton Lines and Richy Carlile has lifted Lake Quinault’s baseball team to the state 1B championship game.
Lines’ hitting and pitching led the Elks to a rout of Quilcene, 11-1 and punched their ticket to next week’s state championship contest by winning the regional 1B Tournament on Saturday at West Valley High School in Yakima.
Earlier in the day, Carlile pitched a one-hitter as the Elks blanked Southwest Washington rival Oakville, 3-0.
The Elks (13-6) will play Liberty Christian for the state championship at 4 p.m. Saturday at Ellensburg.
Lines backed his two-hit pitching against Oakville with three hits, including a double, and drove in three runs.
On the mound, he struck out eight. After pitching to six batters in the first inning, he faced the minimum number of hitters the rest of the way in a contest that was terminated in the fifth inning due to the 10-run mercy rule.
“There was a big speed difference between the pitchers of the two teams,” said Elks head coach Keith Samplawski. “We needed Dalton to pitch the whole game and he did. We drew walks and took extra bases.”
He praised Lines for his all-around play in that game.
Carlile struck out nine against Oakville to win a pitching duel from Acorn ace Shawn Youckton.
The Elks made the most of three hits in that contest, thanks in part to aggressive baserunning. They stole nine bases, mainly in the third and fifth innings.
Dylan Dorhofer walked, stole second and came home on Carlile’s single to open the scoring in the third inning.
Christian Garcia walked, stole second and third and continued home on an errant throw in the fifth. Lines’ single knocked home Dorhofer, who again walked and stole second later in the inning to complete the scoring.
Santos Venegas added a double for the the Elks. Samplawski commended Carlile and Dorhofer for their performances.
