Elma girls clinch league title

RAINIER — Overcoming a sluggish offensive performance, Elma wrapped up the Evergreen 1A League girls basketball championship with a 42-34 victory over Rainier on Friday at Rainier.

The winners of 10 straight, the Eagles (10-0, 16-3) own a three-game lead with two games remaining. They repeated as league champs despite graduating all-state post Carly Meister from last year’s club.

“It’s an awesome accomplishment,” Elma coach Lisa Johnson said. “They’ve worked really hard for it and they deserve it.”

The Eagles tallied only four points in the first quarter Friday and improved their shooting only slightly the rest of the way to a final 24 percent.

They still led 17-10 at the half and maintained the advantage the rest of the way.

Brooke Goldsmith was Elma’s lone double-figure scorer with 11 points. She also had 11 rebounds.

Although off in her shooting, Elma post Megan Finger contributed 13 rebounds and nine blocked shots. Regan Wollen grabbed 12 rebounds for the Eagles.

“We were working hard,” Johnson said, “(but) when the shots weren’t dropping, we kind of lost focus.”

The Eagles entertain Rochester on Tuesday.
