MOUNT VERNON — Bianca Russell and Wenda Poleo combined for 41 points as Grays Harbor College closed out the Skagit Valley Women’s Basketball Tournament with a 75-68 victory over Northwest Indian College on Sunday.
The Chokers (4-5) wound up fifth in the eight-team tourney.
Russell hit 7-of-13 from the field and 6-of-8 from the foul line in leading the Chokers with 21 points. Poleo made 9-of-10 free throws to add 20 points.
Grays Harbor’s Bobbi Britt barely missed her fourth consecutive double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. She was named to the all-tournament team.
Up 35-27 at the half, the Chokers extended the lead to 15 in the second half. Northwest Indian hit some low-percentage shots to close the gap.
The Choker women won two games in a three-day tournament for the first time in several years.
“It was a good weekend for us,” GHC coach Christine Nelson summed up. “Huge steps in the right direction to where we wanted to get to entering league play.”
The Chokers open NWAACC Western Division competition Wednesday at Pierce before making their home debut Saturday against Lower Columbia.
