GHC women drop Skagit tourney opener

MOUNT VERNON — A hot-shot Skagit Valley squad showcased its shooting ability to the delight of its home-court fans and the dismay of Grays Harbor College on Friday night.

Nailing 11-for-21 attempts from behind the 3-point line, the Cardinals flew past the Chokers early and stayed away in an 86-57 victory at the Skagit Valley NWAACC women’s basketball tournament.

At 3 p.m., GHC (2-5) will take on Edmonds College in a loser-out contest.

“We gave up a couple (3-pointers) early on, didn’t get out and match up quick enough,” GHC head coach Christine Nelson said. “For the rest of the game, we had people flying at them and they knocked them down. They’re a good shooting team.

“I’m happy with the energy (from the team tonight),” Nelson added. “We’ve had some losses, but all of them were against some very good teams. We’re just about there. Playing these types of teams will help us in the long run.”

Bobbi Britt led GHC with a double-double — 14 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. Molly Carmody added 13 points for the Chokers.

Grays Harbor College (57) — Maneman 6, Rydman 5, Carmody 13, Britt 14, Starr 3, Swisher 5, Poleo 6, Patterson, Russell 6, Dotson 2, Giles 7. FG — 28-60 (.467). FT — 7-9.
