TOLEDO — Host Mount St. Helens did all its scoring in the first two innings and held off Grays Harbor, 5-3, in the District III 15-year-old Babe Ruth Baseball Tournament on Saturday at Toledo.
Grays Harbor (1-1) will face South Thurston at 11 a.m. today, with the winner challenging unbeaten Mount St. Helens in the championship game at appoximately 3 p.m. All three teams are guaranteed berths in the Southern Washington State Tournament in Pasco.
A dropped fly ball and an infield error produced Mount St. Helens’ three runs in the first inning. The hosts added two more in the second before reliever Rio Ortega shut them down the rest of the way.
Grays Harbor chipped away with two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth and had runners on second and third with two outs in the seventh before Camden Anderson’s fly to deep right was caught to end the game.
Austin Silva singled home Kyle Standstipher (who had also singled) and scored on Chazen Hurd’s single in the Grays Harbor fourth. Mikey Beck delivered an RBI double in the fifth.
“We had the opportunities, we didn’t get the key hit,” Grays Harbor manager Rusty Standstipher said. “Take away the two errors in the first inning and they played good ball.”
Kyle Standstipher and Justin Spencer had three hits each for Grays Harbor.
