Grays Harbor Raceway to finish season for sprints, midgets Saturday

ELMA — The first of two season-ending weekends kicks off tonight with the final races of the season for the 360 sprints and the USAC Ford Focus midgets at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma.

The USRA modifieds, hobby stocks and the hornets will also run on the card, which begins at 6:30 p.m.

The sprint division championship is still up in the air between Quilcene’s J.J. Hickle and Snohomish’s Reece Goetz. Hickle leads Goetz by eight points, 1,234 to 1,226. Enumclaw’s Henry VanDam is third with 1,146 points and would need help to claim the track title away from either Hickle or Goetz.

VanDam, the reigning division champion, leads the field with three wins and is the only driver this season to win more than once.

The midgets have raced at Elma six times with three different winners. Stanwood’s Jared Peterson has won four of the six races, with Poulsbo’s Garrett Johnson and Montesano’s Jeremy Miller earning one win each.

Even with just one win, Miller holds a 16-point lead over Peterson in the track title standings, 828-812, with Snohomish’s Chase Goetz third at 806 and Johnson fourth at 805. All four drivers can claim the championship on Saturday.

On Oct. 6, the modifieds, hobby stocks and hornets will have their season-ending races, also starting at 6:30 p.m.
