Grizzlies bow out of district in volleyball

CASTLE ROCK — Unable to match the power of a pair of Trico League foes, Hoquiam bowed out of the District IV Class 1A Volleyball Tournament on Wednesday at Castle Rock.

The Evergreen 1A Leaguc co-champion Grizzlies fell to Kalama, 25-15, 25-10, 25-18, and were eliminated by White Salmon, 25-23, 25-16, 25-18.

The Trico League, with four teams ranked in the top 10 statewide, went 5-0 against Evergreen 1A opponents Wednesday.

Hoquiam coach Christine Nelson said her team played well in both matches.

“We ran into two tough teams from the south,” Nelson said. “They played well both offensively and defensively. We hit the ball well and I thought we played some of our best defense tonight.”

Chelsy Stewart and Tiffani Dhooghe led Hoquiam in kills against Kalama with six and five, respectively. Brandi Creviston had 13 digs, Dhooghe 11 and Stewart and Megan Gibson nine apiece. Gibson also contributed 14 assists.

Creviston had 17 digs and Gibson 21 assists against White Salmon. Stewart paced Grizzly hitters with 13 kills. She also had 15 digs, two more than Dhooghe.

The Grizzlies concluded their season with a 12-4 record.

“I’m really proud of how hard the girls played, they stayed together and fought until the end,” Nelson summarized. “They should be proud of what they accomplished this season.”
