Both figuratively and literally, Hoquiam pitchers were in control on Monday.
Not allowing a walk in either game, the Grizzlies swept Forks, 4-3 and 10-0, in an Evergreen 1A League baseball doubleheader Monday at Olympic Stadium.
Sammy Lowder scattered six hits in going the distance on the mound for Hoquiam (6-2) in the opener. Kyle Standstipher and Kolby Crowell combined on a two-hitter in the nightcap.
“In 12 innings, our pitchers maintained a lot of control,” HHS coach Steve Jump said. “They didn’t walk a single batter, which I thought was amazing.”
Much-improved Forks rocked Lowder for three runs in the second inning of the opening game. The Grizzlies answered with three of their own in the bottom of the second, with Joel Brydon’s two-run double and Kolby Standstipher’s RBI single the key blows.
Singles by Brydon, Kyle Standstipher and Blake Kelly produced what proved to be the winning run in the fourth. Lowder finished with five scoreless innings.
The Grizzlies settled the nightcap much quicker, scoring five runs apiece in the first two innings en route to a mercy-rule triumph.
Lowder delivered two-run singles in each of the first two frames. Brydon added two hits and two RBIs.
The Grizzlies are scheduled to host Tenino in a single game today and Montesano in a doubleheader Thursday.
