SOUTH BEND — Raymond’s tracksters followed simple instructions to ensure that the Henrie-Weisel Tri-District Trophy would remain in their possession.
Dominating the boys meet, the Seagulls earned combined team honors in the annual Willapa Harbor Tri-District Track Meet on Thursday at South Bend’s Don Weisel Oval.
South Bend edged the Gulls, 63-62, for the girls team victory. But Raymond’s boys racked up 110 points to almost triple the total of runner-up Willapa Valley.
That gave the Gulls a combined total of 172 points, 81 more than Valley. South Bend amassed 88 points.
The Henrie-Weisel Trophy, named in memory of longtime Willapa Harbor track coaches Jim Henrie and Don Weisel, goes to the school with the highest combined co-ed total. Raymond captured the trophy when it was presented for the first time last year.
Rainy, breezy conditions had a major impact on marks, particularly in the field events. Only three high jumpers (two girls and one boy), for example, cleared a minimum height.
The shortage of outstanding marks was something that Raymond coach Mike Tully anticipated.
“Our message was you’re not going to run your best times in this weather,” Tully related, “so go out and do the best you can — and they did.”
Multiple winners from all three schools abounded.
Raymond freshman Alex Vaca had a least a share of four victories. The only legal high jumper, Vaca easily captured the boys 800 and 1,600 and also ran a leg on the Gulls’ winning mile relay team.
South Bend sophomore Emily Sanchez also had a big day with four wins.
The possessor of the state’s second-best Class 2B mark (behind Pe Ell standout Alissa Brooks-Johnson) of 16-2 1/2 in the girls long jump, Sanchez was unable to match that mark in the difficult conditions. She nevertheless bounded 15-4 to win that event, edged Raymond’s Hannah Dykes in a hotly contested 100 meters and anchored the Tribe’s victorious 4x100 and 4x200 relays.
Raymond sophomore Rayce Newman swept the boys sprints and also tacked on a relay win. Teammate Andrew Hamilton swept the boys shot put and discus and Ally Phansisay doubled in the horizontal jumps.
Tully cited Dykes for a season-best mark of 33-2 in the girls triple jump.
Willapa Valley’s David Rockett, the reigning state 2B boys pole vault champion, cleared 12 feet (a mark that would have tied for second at state last year) in that event and also won the long hurdles. Valley’s Michaela Huber, last year’s girls state pole vault champ, prevailed on fewer misses after she and teammate Lauren Friese matched jumps of 9 feet. The pole vaults were contested at Menlo.
Friese swept the two hurdles events.
Willapa Valley throwing ace Katrina Ege, continuing to recover from off-season migraine headaches, won the girls discus at 97-6.
“We put up with the weather and had some good performances,” Viking coach Dave Ege said. “Nothing spectacular, but you’re not going to have anything spectacular in this weather.”
Sanchez was South Bend’s only double individual winner, but the Indians scored well in the field events to nose out Raymond’s girls.
Kathryn Staats won the shot put and Myranda Curtis the javelin.
South Bend coach Steve Lazelle declined comment.
Valley will send a contingent to the Davis Invitational in Yakima on Saturday. Raymond will host a multi-school meet that will also include South Bend next Thursday.
