Division-leading Highline Community College rode stellar pitching to sweep Grays Harbor College, 2-1 and 7-0, in an NWAACC Western Division softball doubleheader Friday at the Bishop Athletic Complex.
The Chokers would have taken the division lead had they swept. Instead, they fell to 7-5 in league and 8-13 overall.
Grays Harbor mustered only seven hits in two games. As importantly, neither Thunderbird pitcher issued a walk.
“We just couldn’t get baserunners,” Choker coach Tom Sutera said. “Every ball we hit hard, we hit right at them.”
Shelby Pase’s solo homer in the fourth inning of the opener represented Grays Harbor’s sole run of the twin bill. The T-Birds had scored two unearned runs in the top of the same inning.
Highline did all its scoring in the nightcap in the fifth and sixth innings. Erica Rydman and Jordan Eberwein collected the two hits for GHC.
The Chokers will be idle until April 21, when they play in the Yakima Crossover Tournament. They’ll face Treasure Valley at 9 a.m. and Olympic at 1 p.m. on the first day and Chemeketa at 8 a.m. and Bellevue at noon on April 22.
