Kayla Hilliard slugged two home runs and broke the school’s single-season record for runs batted in as Hoquiam nailed down second place in the Evergreen 1A League by sweeping Forks by identical 15-0 scores in a Thursday softball doubleheader at Gable Park.
By driving in four runs in the opening game, Hilliard increased her season RBI total to 26, one more than the record set by current Grays Harbor College catcher Jasmine Gilmore.
She hit leadoff homers in the third and fourth innings of the opening game. Jessica Madison’s grand slam in the first gave the Grizzlies (9-3, 13-4) a lead they never relinquished.
Ellie Quercia delivered four hits and drove in four runs in the four-inning nightcap.
Madison pitched a four-hitter in the opener, while Bailee Bradley allowed only three hits in the second game.
The Grizzlies had three outfield assists in the second game — two by Brandi Creviston. Lydia LaLonde had the other.
“We’re swinging the bat well, but I’m really pleased with our defense,” HHS coach Keith Reynvaan said.
Assured of the league’s second seed in next week’s district 1A tournament, the Grizzlies close out their regular season today at home against Pe Ell.
