TENINO — Secure in the knowledge that it’ll play in the District IV 1A tournament next week, a relaxed Hoquiam squad worked its way around Tenino in this Evergreen 1A matchup on Tuesday.

Edgar Fernandez scored twice for the Grizzlies (12-2, 14-2), who’ll face the Trico League’s No. 2 seed in the district semifinals on Tuesday. The match is tentatively scheduled for Stewart Field in Aberdeen.

Austin Montoure, Jared Woodman, Owen Quercia, Anthony Hernandez and Ivan Salguero also scored for Hoquiam.

“The guys are playing relaxed, doing their thing and having fun,” HHS head coach Fidel Sanchez said. “We know where we are in the league, so we came out relaxed.”

Montoure scored in the 10th minute, off a Hernandez feed into the penalty area. Fernandez knocked home a 14th-minute penalty kick and a point-blank shot in the 24th minute. Woodman converted a Quercia crossing pass in the 35th minute, while Quercia scored off a Israel Fernandez free kick in the 45th minute.

Hernandez got his goal in the 63rd minute from a Mario Joya assist and Salguero, according to Coach Sanchez, created HHS history by scoring a goal in both the junior varsity and varsity matches off identical free kicks — 35-yard boots — in the 73rd minute.

Goalkeeper Jamie Bigbie tied a HHS single-season record with his ninth shutout of the season.

On Thursday, Hoquiam hosts league champion Rochester to cap the regular season.
