Hyak teams, Taholah win tourney openers

Girls

OYEHUT — North Beach may have struggled on offense Thursday night, but it didn’t struggle one bit on defense against Forks.

Holding the Spartans scoreless in the third quarter, the Hyaks’ full-court pressure never allowed the visitors a chance to get a good look at the basket and preserved a 26-25 victory in the girls portion of the North Beach Holiday With The Hyaks tournament.

Wakeena DeLaCruz led all scorers with 17 points, 10 steals and eight rebounds for North Beach (4-5), which survived a last-minute free throw miss by Forks. Mousie Shale added six rebounds and six steals for the hosts.

“We kept our full-court pressure on all game long,” North Beach head coach Peter Fry said. “It was the only thing that was making it difficult for them. That was key, because they didn’t get a good look at the end of the game.”

Marya Pope and Quay Sotomish were both cited for their defensive work. The Hyaks hit only 17 percent of their field-goal tries.

Today, North Beach will finish the tournament by hosting Tenino.

OYEHUT — Emily Ackley scored all seven of her points in the fourth quarter as Mary M. Knight pulled away from Tenino in North Beach’s Holiday for the Hyaks tournament.

Ackley, who had missed a couple of weeks due to illness, came off the bench to help settle a defensive struggle.

“She really stepped in and gave us a spark,” Knight coach Lance Valley said.

Lauren Dierkop had 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Owls (6-1). Hannah Frost contributed seven rebounds and six steals, while Miranda Sowle seven assists.

BOYS Hyaks 51, Owls 26

OYEHUT — Limiting Mary M. Knight to single-digit scoring in every quarter, North Beach shot down the Owls on the opening day of its Holiday With the Hyaks tournament Thursday.

The Hyaks (5-4) will face Taholah for the unofficial tournament championship (pairings were pre-determined) at 6 o’clock tonight. Class 1B Taholah upended Class 1A Forks, but the score and details of that contest were not reported.

North Beach held the Owls (4-4) to 20 percent field-goal shooting.

“I thought we played really good defense,” Hyak coach Larry Moore said. “We did a good job helping out on the drives and the shooters. And we did one of our better jobs of blocking out on rebouding this year.”

Corey Thornton was North Beach’s only double-digit scorer with 10 points. He also handed out three assists.

Gabe Hernandez had 11 rebounds and Joseph Wagner four steals for the Hyaks.

Kyle Willey topped the Owls with seven points.
