Keating, Klein near lead in state women’s golf

FEDERAL WAY — Elma High School graduate Alexis Keating and Hoquiam’s Gretchen Klein are currently in fourth place in their respective divisions following the opening round of the Washington State Women’s Amateur golf tournament Tuesday at Twin Lakes Golf & Country Club in Federal Way.

Keating, who recently completed her freshman year at the University of Colorado, carded a four-over-par 76 to tie for fourth in the state Women’s Amateur. She trails co-leaders Lauren Sewell of Renton and Mallory Kent of Tukwila by three strokes.

Gretchen Klein of Hoquiam is also fourth, but only one stroke off the pace, in the Senior Women’s Amateur being staged concurrently at the same course.

Klein shot an 80 in the opening round. Former champions Ginny Burkey of Fircrest, and Lisa Smego of Olympia are tied with Sharon Dummey of Kirkland at 79.

Hall of Famer Ann Swanson, formerly of Grays Harbor and a current resident of Bellevue, is tied for fifth at 82.

The 54-hole tournaments run through Thursday.
