Looking back at ‘48
The 1948 Aberdeen-Hoquiam football game was one of the greatest of all the Thanksgiving Day games.
The Grizzlies won, 28-23. In the first half, Jack Elway threw four touchdown passes to fullback Bill Earley.
After halftime, Bill met up with Bobcat left end Bob Campbell and Bill was carried off the field on a stretcher. The Bobcats had a last chance near the goal line, calling the play that they used to beat Olympia with Junior Ellingson passing to Campbell. Only this time, Junior caught his arm to throw as three Grizzlies knocked him flat to win the game.
The 1943 Miller Junior High Bobkittens won championships in both football and basketball. Coach Pete Nogrododski’s football team won all three games, using a line shift and backfield shift with left end Eugene Edwartds scoring seven touchdowns.
In basketball, Pete’s team was the first one to use the zone defense, with guards Bob Kevo and Ray Garrison scoring off the fast break. Kevo and Elmer Pellegrini were killed in a gun battle in Seattle after graduation.
