AUBURN — Quarterback Dalton Lines rushed for 367 yards and scored eight touchdowns as short-handed Lake Quinault held off Evergreen Lutheran 62-52, in a non-league football opener Saturday at Auburn’s Mountainview High School.
Suiting up only 10 players, the Elks sustained three significant injuries during the contest, but managed to keep enough players on the field to prevail. Christian Garcia made two clutch interceptions in the final six minutes to help Quinault survive an Eagle comeback.
“It was one of the gutsiest performances I’ve seen from a group of kids,” Lake Quinault coach Darwin Sharrah said. “It was something else.”
The Elks, who never trailed, saw a 42-14 lead late in the second quarter shrink to 48-40 after three periods. Lines’ seventh touchdown run and Pablo Aguilar’s conversion run increased the margin to 16 and, following an Evergreen Lutheran TD, Lines broke an 89-yard scoring scamper with 5:20 remaining. Garcia had intercepted a pass on the Elk 7-yard line moments earlier.
Evergreen Lutheran scored again in the final five minutes and was driving in the late going before the last of Garcia’s three interceptions for the contest sealed the victory.
Lines had earlier scored on runs of 12, 60, 2, 56, 15 and 5 yards. Aguilar tallied on a 22-yard run and also had a 38-yard gainer that set up Lines’ 2-yard touchdown run.
“We’ve got a lot of speed and fortunately we were able to get around the ends,” Sharrah said.
Three of Quinault’s walking wounded made significant contributions defensively. Chris Erdman (who played despite a hip pointer) and Santos Venegas (strained knee) had 10 tackles apiece, while Austin Peters (sprained ankle) added nine tackles and sack. Tyler Colton led the Elks with 11 tackles.
The Elks (1-0) visit Crescent for another non-leaguer Saturday.
