POULSBO — Winning its final three games, Mason Baseball of Aberdeen earned a state berth by placing third in its classification in the American Legion Divisional Tournament last weekend at North Kitsap High School.
The top-four teams advanced to state beginning Saturday in Walla Walla.
Following a 5-3 loss to a team composed of players from Wilson High School in Tacoma, Mason stayed alive with a 1-0 win over North Kitsap.
Sammy Lowder pitched a complete-game four-hitter and Josh Bishop stole home on a misfired suicide squeeze attempt for the game’s only run.
Kolby Shelton threw a three-hitter, striking out eight, in a 4-0 win over Titus-Will of Centralia on Sunday that secured a state berth. Mason scored twice in the fourth inning on Bishop’s single, Deon Schlesser’s double, a fielder’s choice and Shelton’s perfectly executed squeeze bunt. Bishop’s two-run triple in the fifth inning concluded the scoring.
Mason trounced North Thurston, 11-0, in a game to determine state seeding. Shelton delivered four hits, including a home run, to support the six-hit pitching of Tristan Stutesman. Schlesser contributed three hits and three RBIs, while Cole Edwards added two hits and three RBIs for Mason.
Olympia won the tournament, defeating Buckley-Enumclaw in the championship game.
