Bulldogs 4, Wildcats 0
At Stewart Field in Aberdeen, Montesano took an early lead, then fought off Ocosta before putting the match away in the second half in this Evergreen 1A match on Thursday.
Mackinzie Malizia scored the opening goal from 25 yards out in the fifth minute for the Bulldogs (4-5, 5-5), who led 1-0 at the half. Montesano goalkeeper Kacie Kloempken saved a penalty kick in the 25th minute against Ocosta’s Mikayla Sunde.
Ocosta played with just 12 players for the match.
Mackenzi Howard scored twice in the second half, hitting a sharp-angled shot that hit goalkeeper Leaha McPherson before going into the net in the 44th minute and a 20-yard bomb in the 66th minute. Taylor Birdsall, in the 64th minute, got an assist from Katie Chapman on a far-post 18-yard shot.
“We worked on some things, did a better job of penetrating and creating chances,” Montesano head coach Jeff Lenherr said. “They were man-marking us the whole time. Once the girls realized they can break them down on the dribble, we got a lot more chances. Ocosta played hard and never gave up.”
“I was proud of them,” Ocosta head coach Mike King said. “We worked really hard. They kept up with their marking, so we didn’t give up easy shots.”
McPherson finished with 14 saves, with Sunde, Kayt Jones and Leeann Rindlisbacher cited for fine performances for Ocosta (1-7, 1-7).
On Monday, Montesano travels to Adna. On Tuesday, Ocosta travels to Forks.
