MONTESANO — Opening the season at home, Montesano’s girls soccer team welcomed Adna to the Evergreen 1A League with a 3-0 victory at Rottle Field on Tuesday night.
Freshman Makenzi Howard scored twice in a seven-minute span (13th and 20th minutes) from near-identical spots on the field — a 16-yard power shot from the left side into the net.
Tianna Schurr, also a freshman, converted a penalty kick in the 38th minute after Taylor Birdsall was fouled and taken down inside the penalty area.
“The defense played really well tonight,” Montesano head coach Jeff Lenherr said. “Adna had one very fast player (reigning state 2B 100-meter champion Regyn Gaffney) and we had to pay attention to her. In the second half, we had a lot of possession. We only gave them one chance on goal and we couldn’t put the ball into the net. We were a little impatient in the final third of the game.”
Montesano outshot Adna, 20-2. On Tuesday, Montesano travels to Ocosta.
