Montesano sweeps North Beach powerlifting meet

OYEHUT — Reigning state champion Montesano swept team honors in the inaugural North Beach Blast powerlifting tournament on Saturday.

Winning four titles, Monte’s boys totaled 58 points to edge runner-up White River by six in the team standings. Shelton was third with 41 points and North Beach fourth with 21.

The short-handed Bulldog girls used their depth to nip Northwest Christian of Lacey, 48-47. North Beach was third with 31 points.

Montesano’s girls were without several regulars due to softball commitments.

“The freshmen stepped up and helped our girls team compete today,” Bulldog coach Eric Stanfield said.

Monte’s Tanner Birdsall at 148 points (with a 1,030-pound lift total), Shad Rogers at 165 (1,080), Noah Ewing at 181 (1,175) and Jake Massoth at unlimited (1,235) won individual boys titles. Kevin Grimsted of Union of Vancouver was named the Outstanding Male Lifter.

Chazlyn O’Bannon at 97 pounds (460 total), Ashley Laney at 105 (475) and Lexi Prante at 198 (680) were Montesano’s female champions.

Elma’s Stefanie Cristelli at 148 (705) and North Beach 165-pounder Crystal Lynch (740) also won their division. Outstanding Female Lifter honors went to Northwest Christian’s Gwen Hamilton.

Next up for most area teams is the White Salmon Invitational on March 23.
