Ocosta girls win own x-country title

WESTPORT — Mark Morris’ boys finished with a 1-2-3 finish in the boys meet, while Ocosta’s girls showed their depth early on in the season to win the team titles at the Ocosta Invitational on Saturday morning.

The Monarchs easily won the boys title with 28 points, led by Aaron Brumbaugh winning at 15:35. The Wildcats were just one of three complete teams, but put all five of their scoring runners in the top 18 spots to win with 23 points.

Orting, Onalaska, Elma, Forks, Aberdeen, Willapa Valley, South Bend and Castle Rock also ran in the meet.

The Bobcats’ Kyle Hurd, a freshman, led all local runners in the boys meet in fourth at 16:46. North Beach sophomore Michael Beck was fifth at 16:58.

Elma’s Daphne Peek was the top local runner with a second-place finish at 20:06 in the girls meet. Onalaska’s Bernadette Hayden won the race at 19:33. Ocosta freshman Kathryn Anderson was fourth and Elma’s Luna Zang was fifth.

“Overall, I was pleased with the girls effort,” Ocosta head coach Aaron Anderson said. “There are a few things we still need to work on, but it is early in the season.”

Anderson cited Luke Anderson, who took 11th overall in the boys meet.
