Prep roundup: 10 Aberdeen swimmers qualify for sub-district

North 2A Sub-District meet

The last-minute site changes and confusion over where Wednesday’s North 2A Sub-District meet would be held worked in Aberdeen’s favor at the YMCA of Grays Harbor.

As the last chance for many swimmers to qualify for next week’s District IV 2A meet at Mark Morris’ Dick Mealy Pool in Longview, 10 Bobcats secured entry with top-three finishes — including four event victories.

Ryan McElliott, Levi Rose, Jeremiah Smith and Stuart Ball all punched their district tickets with event wins.

McElliott, a sophomore, won the 200-yard freestyle (2:21.02) and finished his day with a second-place finish in the 50 free. Rose, also a sophomore, used the first of six heats to register the fastest swim to win the 100 freestyle (1:01.84) and got another district berth with a third-place finish in the 100 breaststroke.

Rose’s win capped an Aberdeen sweep in the 100 free — Omar Martinez and Ryan Catron finished 2-3 to each move on to the district meet.

Freshman Smith also used a first-heat swim in the 500 freestyle to drop 49 seconds from his seeding time to win at 7:01.06. Senior Ball capped the meet by winning a close 100 breast race at 1:21.13.

Other Aberdeen swimmers who finished in the top-three places were: Kyle Brewer, second (200 individual medley); Britton Tatro, third (100 butterfly); Roman Langley, third (500 free); and Mike Lang, third (200 free).

Several other Bobcats had previously qualified for district.

Indians 52, Comets 31

SOUTH BEND — Led by Katlyn Sawyer’s 18 points and 12 rebounds, South Bend earned a first-round district bye by thumping Naselle in a Pacific League finale Wednesday at Koplitz Fieldhouse.

The Indians (9-3, 11-9) fulfilled one of their preseason goals by finishing in the top two in the league, South Bend coach Gary Wilson reported.

Down 8-4 in the early going, the Tribe steadily took command. Sierra Cearns hit a pair of 3-point baskets in the third quarter to help break the game open.

Makenzie Russell had 11 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots, Myranda Curtis nine rebounds and four assists and Cearns four steals and four assists for the Indians. Alison Funkhouser was cited for a fine all-around performance.

Naselle’s Katie Green led all scorers with 19 points.

“We moved the ball well,” Wilson said. “We were patient and looked for open shots and we did have some nice transition baskets, which pulled them out of their press. Those were things we couldn’t do at the beginning of the season, so I’m pleased with our improvement.”

South Bend will open district Feb. 9, probably at Montesano.

OYEHUT — On Senior Night, host North Beach struggled in the first half before settling down in the third quarter to run past Ocosta in this Pacific League finalè on Wednesday.

Wakeena DeLaCruz and Mousie Shale led all scorers with 15 points each for the Hyaks (4-8, 10-10), who’ll begin district play next Wednesday against the Central League fourth seed at Rochester.

Ocosta’s season comes to an end at 0-12, 2-18.

“For us, we had a packed house for Senior Night and rushed things in the first half,” North Beach head coach Peter Fry said. “That was the culprit. We were hurrying everything. We exploded in the third quarter, was able to convert our shots and we slowed down our thought process.”

DeLaCruz pulled down eight rebounds and swiped seven steals, Koral Frost pulled down seven rebounds and Quay Sotomish finished with five rebounds, four steals and three blocks.

No Wildcat scored more than five points.
