BOYS SWIMMING

Aberdeen Relays

Olympia and North Thurston won all but three events and walked away from the YMCA of Grays Harbor pool with a share of the team title at the Aberdeen Relays on Wednesday.

Aberdeen, which finished fourth, won two events — one varsity and one junior varsity — and Shelton, which took third, won one event. Timberline, Capital and River Ridge also participated in the meet.

The Bobcats’ 400-yard freestyle relay team of Colton Sundstrom, Dillon Rowe, Brad Farrer and Joe Bowley won the event with a near-state qualifying time of 3:33.92. The team was just over one second from the state qualifying standard.

AHS junior varsity team of Keegan Davison, Shane Golphenee, Britton Tatro and Keegan Shippey won the 400 freestyle JV race in 4:24.39. Davison, in lead-off relay swims, hit two District IV 2A qualifying marks on the day.

North Thurston’s 200 freestyle relay team qualified for the state 3A meet by just .01 second in the final event of the day. Aberdeen took second in the race.

On Wednesday, Aberdeen will host its first dual meet of the season by taking on River Ridge.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Pirates 47, Vikings 44

ADNA — Lane Wasson scored 20 points as Adna withstood a Willapa Valley rally in a season-opening non-league contest Thursday at Adna.

Matt Konigsberger, who scored 10 of his team-high 16 points in the fourth quarter, hit a 3-point basket late in the contest to pull the Vikings within three. Valley’s shot at a tying three in the closing seconds was off the mark.

Wasson’s output included four treys.

“I really thought the difference in the game was threes,” Valley coach John Peterson said. “We certainly could have played better, but we did some good things.”

Peterson was particularly encouraged by the scarcity of turnovers. The Vikings (0-1) committed only eight.

Willapa Valley also won the rebounding battle, 35-24. Stephen Camenzind, who scored 15 points, led the Vikings in rebounds with 12.

Konigsberger handed out four assists and blocked two shots. Peterson also cited the play of Randy Heckard.

The Vikings journey to Tacoma Baptist on Friday as part of a co-ed tripleheader.
