Prep Roundup: Bulldogs nipped in soccer opener

Beavers 2, Bulldogs 1

TENINO — Scoring twice within a minute in the first half, Tenino held off a late Montesano surge to prevail in an Evergreen 1A League opener Monday night at Beaver Stadium.

The Beavers converted a breakaway in the 22nd minute, then scored off a scramble in front of the Bulldog goal one minute later.

Outshooting the Beavers, 8-4, the Bulldogs controlled play in the second half but cashed in on only one opportunity. That came in the 69th minute when a Monte shot was bobbled by the goalkeeper. Midfielder David Sawyer secured the rebound and slipped the ball between the goalkeeper’s legs and into the net.

“In the first half, our defense was tight,” Montesano coach Jeff Lenherr said. “In the second half, they figured it out and they did a great job. I don’t think (Tenino) even had a shot in the second half.

“We had a ton of chances, we didn’t finish it off,” Lenherr said. “For the first game, you could tell there were jitters but I was really pleased with the improvement from the first half to the second half.”

The Bulldogs will host Forks in a varsity-only contest Thursday at Rottle Field.

Mules 10, Wildcats 8

WESTPORT — Wahkiakum withstood a final-inning Ocosta rally to nip the Wildcats in a non-league game shortened to five innings by rain. The scheduled second game of the doubleheader was rained out.

Lars Blix doubled — one of his four hits for the contest — to highlight a nine-run third inning that gave the Mules a 10-0 lead.

The Wildcats, however, capitalized on walks and hit batters to score seven runs in the fifth and fall barely short.

“We kind of started off flat, but the guys really came together in the bottom of the fifth,” Ocosta coach Jason Quinby said. “Hopefully, we turned a corner.”

Nate Krigbaum had three hits for the Wildcats (0-3), who started five freshmen due to eligibility issues.

Ocosta is scheduled to host Lake Quinault today in a non-league contest shifted from Amanda Park.
