Prep Roundup: Cats, Grizzlies trounce soccer foes

BOYS SOCCER

Bobcats 6, Bearcats 0

Juan Oropeza and Juan Lopez each scored hat tricks as unbeaten Aberdeen thumped Chehalis in an Evergreen 2A Conference match Tuesday night at Stewart Field.

The Bobcats (5-0, 6-0) needed only 72 seconds to get on the scoreboard. After the Bearcats were called for a handball in the penalty area, Lopez converted the penalty kick.

Aberdeen remained in control the rest of the way, outshooting the Bearcats, 17-2.

“It was every bit as dominant as the score indicated,” Aberdeen coach Larry Fleming noted. “We did a really nice job passing.”

Lopez scored again in the 10th minute and Oropeza added two goals — one on a header off Lopez’s free kick — to increase the lead to 4-0 at the half.

The Bobcats indulged in multiple position switches in the second half, moving goalkeeper Andres Valdes to the field while defender Samuel Ruiz took over between the pipes.

Oropeza and Lopez tallied one goal apiece in the second half.

Fleming cited midfielder-defender Dominic Shaffer and reserve Uriel Espino for fine play.

Aberdeen’s junior varsity also remained unbeaten with a 1-0 win. Juan Venegas scored the lone goal, with Jake Myers cited for fine play.

The Bobcats will be idle until April 4, when they face a tough test at home against Centralia.

Grizzlies 3, Warriors 0

ROCHESTER — Israel Fernandez contributed a goal and two assists as Hoquiam wore down Rochester in an Evergreen 1A League match Tuesday at Rochester.

The Grizzlies (5-0, 5-1) outshot the Warriors, 23-4, but had difficulty converting their scoring opportunities. With the Warriors relying almost exclusively on long balls, Hoquiam spent most of the game in Rochester territory.

“We clearly dominated,” HHS coach Fidel Sanchez said. “We got a league win on the road, but we got a little flustered, a little frustrated in the first half.”

Jonathan Molina’s goal off a Fernandez assist in the 37th minute represented the sum of the scoring in the first half.

Hoquiam’s Mario Joya put away about a six-yard shot in the 59th minute. Fernandez concluded the scoring by heading in a cross from Molina.

Freshman forward-midfielder Alex PugaDeLaRosa and junior defender Brenner Carlstrom drew Sanchez’s praise.

Adin Fillo scored twice and Tanner Strom added the other goal as Hoquiam took the JV match, 3-0.

The Grizzlies entertain Forks on Thursday.
