Prep Roundup: Valley boys stay alive at district

Vikings 67, Wildcats 41

MONTESANO — Stephen Camenzind scored 18 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as Willapa Valley stayed alive in the District IV Class 2B Tournament by eliminating Ocosta on Wednesday night at Montesano’s Bo Griffith Memorial Gym.

Valley (16-6) will face Mossyrock in a winner-to-regionals, loser-out battle of Vikings (the teams have the same mascot) on Friday. That contest is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Rochester.

The Vikings dominated the boards Wednesday, outrebounding the Vikings, 46-20.

“Rebounding was the key to the game,” Ocosta coach Jason Quinby asserted. “Valley just destroyed us on the boards. They were very aggressive and, to me, that was the difference in the game.”

Valley took command by outscoring the Wildcats 21-12 in the second quarter for a 31-21 halftime advantage. Viking coach John Peterson also liked his team’s play in the second half and credited Anthony Sagen, who drove and dished repeatedly, with setting the tone.

“He was everywhere, he’s like a hurricane in motion,” Peterson said. “He really speeded things up for us.”

Matt Konigsberger scored 12 points for Valley. Peterson cited the reserve work of Drew Pearson, who had eight points and eight rebounds.

Nate Krigbaum scored 10 points for the Wildcats.

Making its first district appearance in several years, Ocosta finished the season with a 10-12 record.

“I would like to commend my seniors for showing great leadership and taking the program to the next level,” Quinby said. He noted that the Wildcat jayvees went winless four years ago.

Mules 69, Gulls 33

ROCHESTER — Hot-shooting Wahkiakum hit the accelerator early and never let up in eliminating Raymond from the District IV Class 2B Tournament on Wednesday.

Dropping both of their district games, the Pacific League champion Gulls finished the season with a 16-6 record.

Lars Blix scored 19 points and Peter Weiler added 17 for the Mules, who led 20-8 after one quarter and 31-15 at the half.

The Gulls, meanwhile, committed a season-high 25 turnmovers.

“We never got anything going offensively, never got into a rhythm,” Raymond coach Mike Tully said. “We gave up too many baskets early and that got them going.”

Carte Bisbee was high for Raymond with nine points.

Tully thanked seniors Bisbee and Andrew Hamilton for their four years of contributions to the program.
