N. Mason tourney
BELFAIR — Aberdeen senior Jaime Miranda won his division and earned the tourney’s Outstanding Wrestler award at the North Mason Invitational wrestling tournament on Saturday.
Miranda won a tough weight class in taking the 285-pound crown. Although leading most of the way, he was forced to go the distance in edging North Kitsap’s Brenden Best, sixth at state last February, in the title match.
Aberdeen’s Tristan Anderson placed second at 126 pounds. Sultan’s James Mackenzie registered a technical fall over Anderson, 19-1, in the title match.
Four Bobcats — Jordon Logan at 285, David Garcia at 195, Justin Berkley at 138 and Tristen Jimenez at 132 — tied for third in their weight classes. Bouts to decide third and fourth places were not contested since wrestlers in those brackets had reached their match limits.
Jose Duran, who figured to be a contender at 170 pounds, failed to make the team bus.
The Bobcats wound up fifth in the 17-team field with an even 100 points. Host North Mason took team honors.
“We basically wrestled very well,” AHS coach Chuck Veloni said. “The kids were ready to wrestle when they got here. It was a tough tournament, very tough, all the brackets were full.”
The Bobcats return to Evergreen 2A Conference action Thursday at River Ridge.
Vashon Rock tourney
VASHON ISLAND — Two Montesano wrestlers finished second in the Vashon Island Rock tournament on Friday.
Monte’s Anthony Louthan was the runner-up at 170 pounds, dropping a 5-2 decision in the title match. Teammate Ben O’Brien was pinned in the 182-pound final.
Only nine Bulldogs competed in the tournament due to other commitments, but five wound up placing.
Kylar Prante at 145 pounds and Christian Gutierrez at 160 each advanced as far as the semifinals but wound up fifth. Montesano’s Austin Vinson placed fourth at 113.
“For the kids that we took, I thought we wrestled really well,” Bulldog coach Jeff Klinger said.
Elma’s results were published in a previous edition.
