Prep Wrestling: Eagles, Bulldogs each sweep double dual

MONTESANO — Elma and Montesano each swept their opponents in a double-dual wrestling match Wednesday night at Montesano.

The Eagles beat Rainier, 62-10, and Tenino, 62-13, while the Bulldogs downed Tenino, 42-20, and Rainier, 51-18.

Elma coach Jason Dick made liberal use of his younger wrestlers in both matches, with many of his charges wrestling up from their customary weight.

“I’m very happy and impressed with my second varsity guys who stepped up tonight,” Dick said.

Elma sophomore Jacob Nelson won two contested matches. Dick also cited the performances of Mark Turpin and Steven Persell. The latter gave a good account of himself against Tenino’s highly regarded Zack Chamberlain before dropping a decision at 160 pounds.

Montesano’s Ben O’Brien, at 182 pounds, and Anthony Louthan each won two contested matches, with O’Brien prevailing by pin and technical fall.

Monte’s Jacob Sampair nearly pulled off a first-round pin against Chamberlain, but Chamberlain wound up securing the pin himself early in the third round.

“As a whole, our team wrestled pretty well,” Bulldog coach Jeff Klinger said. “We’re starting to catch up with people as far as match counts go.”

On Saturday, Elma will compete in Hoquiam’s Grizzly Alumni Invitational, while the Bulldogs travel to Rainier for the Sgt. Justin Norton Invitational.

ROCHESTER — Rochester’s Warriors took a couple of overtime matches to beat Hoquiam in an Evergreen 1A League match Wednesday at Rochester.

The 285-pound match between Hoquiam’s Dakota Boone and Matt Shields, in fact, went into triple overtime. After the first two extra sessions went scoreless, Boone chose the down position in the third OT, but Shields prevented him from escaping to secure the victory.

David Molitor, at 138 pounds, notched the only Grizzly pin.

“We did fine,” HHS coach Fidel Sanchez said. “There were matches we needed to win and we didn’t.”
