Slow start plagues Hoquiam in 24-12 loss

ROCHESTER — Leading 21-0 at the half, Rochester rolled past Hoquiam, 24-12, in Evergreen 1A League football play on Friday at Rochester.

The Warriors (2-0, 3-1) scored once in the first quarter and twice in the second quarter.

The Grizzlies (0-2, 0-4) rushed for 128 yards and passed for 56 yards for a total of 184 yards.

Tyler White scored the first touchdown for the Grizzlies with a 45-yard run just before halftime. Quarterback Kenny Wakefield ran the ball into the end zone from 20 yards out for the final Grizzly score.

“They scored early, but we won the second half,” said Grizzly coach Rick Moore. “We were a better team by the second half, but could not catch up for the win.”

Moore cited defensive players Tahj Malone and Brenner Carlstrom for fine play. He also praised quarterback Wakefield for fine play in that position.

On Friday, Hoquiam travels to Castle Rock for a non-leaguer.
