Softball roundup: Bobcat pitchers combined for no-hitter; Grizzlies sweep

Aberdeen pitchers Mo Donovan and Grace Utto-Galarneau combined to give their team a great start to the season, teaming for a five-inning no-hitter against River Ridge in Friday’s Evergreen 2A League opener at the Bishop Athletic Complex.

Striking out seven, winning pitcher Donovan got plenty of offensive support and a quick end to the contest when the Bobcats scored 10 in the second inning en route to a 14-1 mercy-rule victory over the Hawks. Utto-Galarneau pitched the final two innings.

“I was pretty impressed with our first game,” Aberdeen first-year head coach Jeff Timmons said. “We hit when we should have and when we were in scoring position. It was a whole team effort.”

The Bobcats (1-0) jumped out with a four-run first inning and put the game away in the second inning.

Brianna Ashlock walked to start off the inning and Shannon Chesterman hit an RBI triple to score Ashlock. Kiana Dixon and Alexxi Timmons hit back-to-back RBI doubles.

Utto-Galarneau followed with a two-run hit, scoring Timmons and Dixon. Stephanie Boone hit a single, followed by walks for Heather Dublanko and Ashlock. Chesterman hit a misplayed fly ball to center field and three runs scored on the error. She scored on a Dixon single. Timmons ended the inning with a two-run single, scoring Dixon and Chesterman.

The Hawks scored their lone run in the second inning.

On Monday, the Bobcats will host Centralia.

Grizzlies split

ROCHESTER — Bailee Bradley’s pitching and hitting in the second game enabled Hoquiam to split with Rochester in an Evergreen 1A League-opening doubleheader Friday at Rochester.

The Grizzlies won the nightcap, 9-2, after dropping the opening game, 4-1.

Bradley allowed only three hits — all doubles — and struck out six. She also pounded out three hits.

“It all started with Bailee and her pitching,” HHS coach Keith Reynvaan said. “She was ahead of the batters the whole game and did a great job.”

Leadoff batter Chelsy Stewart, 6-for-8 in the twin bill, scored three runs in the nightcap. Ellie Quercia also had three hits, including a two-run double in the first inning.

The Grizzlies collected seven hits in the opening game, but most came with two outs. Stewart also had three hits in this contest.

“We just weren’t ready to play,” Reynvaan said. “We went through the motions and couldn’t get going.”

Hoquiam (1-1, 2-2) is scheduled to visit Elma in a doubleheader Thursday.
