Softball Roundup: Elma clinches league title with sweep of Tenino

Elma sweeps

TENINO — Moved up one day due to conflicting schedules, Elma didn’t mind as it combined strong hitting with solid pitching to formally clinch the Evergreen 1A title with a 16-3 and 19-4 doubleheader sweep of Tenino on Wednesday.

The Eagles (11-1, 16-2) finish up their regular season at Kalama on Friday, then start district play at Borst Park in Centralia on Wednesday.

“We sealed the league title ourselves this time,” Elma head coach Janene Todd said. “I hope we can take this to the next level and keep playing like we’ve been playing. We made quite a few changes in these games. We needed to put girls in different spots and give them time in order to gain confidence entering districts.”

Ashley Cooper picked up the win in both games, striking out 12 in nine innings of work. Kayla Pacheco got work in the circle in the second game, while ace pitcher Brooke Goldsmith played in the field.

Stacia Burbidge drove in two runs to lead Elma in the opener, while Sydney Smythe drove in four on four hits in the four-inning night cap.

Bobcats 2, Ducks 1

Kiana Dixon’s solo home run in the sixth inning gave Aberdeen a 2-1 victory over Toutle Lake in a non-league softball game Wednesday at Centralia’s Fort Borst Park.

The district-bound Bobcats closed out their regular season with a 12-8 record.

The Bobcats used the long ball to decide a low-scoring pitching duel. Grace Utto-Galarneau homered in the second before Dixon slugged her game-winning blow over the left field fence.

Aberdeen pitchers Mo Donovan and Utto-Galarneau combined on a four-hitter, while Toutle Lake’s Paige Deffenbaugh (the daughter of Montesano High grad Neil Deffenbaugh), allowed only five hits.

“Toutle Lake is a 2B powerhouse,” Bobcat coach Jeff Timmons said. “It was a good pitchers duel between their pitcher and our two pitchers. We played good defense behind the pitchers and held on for the win.”

The Bobcats will return to Borst Park for district competition a week from today, facing the Greater St. Helens League champion at 4 p.m.
