Westport halibut seasons set

Halibut fishing off Westport will open May 5, the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife reported.

The halibut season in Marine Area 2 (which encompasses the Westport area) will run Sundays and Tuesdays for three consecutive weeks. The area-wide fishery will be closed May 26 and 28. If a sufficient quota of halibut remain, it will re-open the following week and continue until the quota is reached or Sept. 29, whichever occurs first.

The northern nearshore area will also open May 5 and continue seven days per week until the nearshore quote is reached.

The quota for the area-wide fishery is 40,739 pounds. In the nearshore fishery, the quota is 2,000 pounds.

The halibut quota for the Ilwaco-Chinook area will remain the same, but the open days have been changed from Thursday-Saturday last year to Friday-Sunday this year. Last year’s southern coast catch fell some 4,000 pounds short of the quota, department officials said.

In all marine areas open to halibut fishing, there is a one-fish daily catch limit and no minimum size restriction. Anglers may possess a maximum of two fish in any form and must record their catch on a Fish & Wildlife catch record card.
