Aberdeen wrestling tourney due Saturday

Shifting to an early season event, the Aberdeen Invitational wrestling tournament is scheduled for Saturday at Sam Benn Gym.

A strong field that includes state-ranked Cheney and perennial power Chehalis is expected for the tourney. Hoquiam, Taholah, Black Hills, Steilacoom, Klahowya and host Aberdeen are also entered in the event.

Wrestling begins at 10 a.m., with the title round planned for approximately 4 p.m.

Aberdeen had previously hosted the all-County Invitational and its own invitational meet in mid-December. The desire for a more competitive field prompted the move to Dec. 1.

“Our tournament last year was competing with four other tournaments that provided the other teams a better opportunity than we could have provided,” Aberdeen coach Chuck Veloni said. “By moving it up two weeks, we are one of a small handful of teams that will be hosting a tournament at that time. Therefore, we become more of a draw.”

Monte grads played on NWAACC champs

Montesano High School graduates Sydney Bullington and Ashlyn Crossan played for a Peninsula College team that won the NWAACC women’s soccer championship earlier this month in Tukwila.

The Pirates downed Spokane Community College in a shootout, 1-1 (3-2). Bullington, a sophomore forward, made the second of the three penalty kicks. Crossan is a freshman forward.
