3 Willapa Harbor teams ranked

Three Willapa Harbor teams were rated in the weekly Associated Press state basketball poll.

Raymond’s girls remained fifth in the Class 2B rankings. The Raymond boys continued as the seventh-rated team among Class 2B boys and Willapa Valley’s boys cracked the top 10 in the same classification. The Vikings are tied for ninth.

North Beach C squad tourney set

Winter Fest XIV, North Beach High School’s annual C squad boys and girls basketball tournaments, is scheduled for Monday at the high school’s “House of Pain” gym.

Hoquiam’s and Raymond’s boys and girls, Montesano’s boys and Ocosta’s girls will join the host Hyaks in the tourney. Each team is guaranteed two games, with the championship games planned for 5 and 6:30 p.m. The round-robin schedule:

8 a.m. — North Beach vs. Hoquiam boys. 9:30 a.m. — North Beach vs. Hoquiam girls. 11 a.m. — Montesano vs. Raymond boys. 12:30 p.m. — Ocosta vs. Raymond girls.

G.H. Bearcats tryouts Saturday

The Grays Harbor Bearcats will hold tryouts for the 2013 season on Saturday morning at Stewart Field in Aberdeen.

Signups start at 9:30 a.m. and tryouts start at 10 a.m. All players must visit the team’s website — www.ghbearcats.com — to sign the waiver papers and get registered with the league.

All players must bring cleats and water and dress for the weather. Another tryout will also be held on Jan. 26, also at Stewart Field.

Seahawks lose

defensive coordinator

Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Gus Bradley was hired this morning as the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Seattle Times reported.

Bradley spent the last four seasons in Seattle, where his defense improved each of the last three years. This season, the Seahawks ranked first in the NFL in points allowed (15.3), fourth in yards (306.2) and tied for fourth in takeaways (31).
