Regional wrestling due Saturday
Hoquiam will host the Region I Class 1A wrestling tournament on Saturday.
Elma, Hoquiam, Montesano and other members of the Evergreen 1A League will be joined at regionals this year by schools from the Northwest League (Blaine, Meridian, Nooksack Valley, etc.).
Wrestling will begin on three mats at 10 a.m.. The title round is planned for approximately 4:30 p.m. and will probably be contested on two mats to accommodate the Northwest League’s travel plans.
The top four finishers at each weight will advance to Mat Classic at the Tacoma Dome on Feb. 15-16.
Aberdeen will compete in a Class 2A regional Saturday at Tumwater. Several Twin Harbors schools will be represented in a Class 2B regional the same day at Chief Leschi High School in Puyallup. The top four per division in the 2A tourney and the top five per weight in the Class B event also earns Tacoma Dome berths.
The regional girls tourney is scheduled for Battle Ground on Saturday, with the top five advancing.
Bobcat girls open district tonight
Aberdeen will face second-ranked Chehalis in the opening round of the District IV Class 2A Girls Basketball Tournament tonight at Chehalis. The tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The double-elimination tournament runs through Feb. 19, with the top three teams earning regional berths. Tonight’s opening-round pairings, with all games scheduled for 7 p.m.
Aberdeen at Chehalis; Black Hills at Hockinson; Centralia at Mark Morris; Washougal at River Ridge.
Messi extends Barcelona contract until 2018
Lionel Messi has extended his contract with Barcelona for two years until 2018, the Spanish league leaders said on Thursday.
It was the sixth time that the Argentine idol had extended his contract with Barca since making his debut in 2004.
According to media reports, his annual salary has been increased to around $17.6 million, making him one of the highest-paid players in world football.
Messi, 25, has scored 34 league goals for Barca this season, leaving him on course to break the record of 50 goals that he himself established last season.
