Raymond teams ranked in state polls

Both Raymond teams were ranked on the opening week of the Associated Press state basketball poll that was released Wednesday.

The Gulls are fifth in the state Class 2B girls rankings. Raymond is seventh in the Class 2B boys poll.

Monte baseball registration set

An informational meeting and registration for Montesano youth baseball is scheduled for 7 p.m. Jan. 17 at the Montesano High School library.

Browns hire Carolina assistant

Rob Chudzinski, who has spent the past two seasons as the offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers, has been named the head coach of the Cleveland Browns, a team spokesman confirmed Thursday.

Chudzinski succeeds Pat Shurmur, who was fired on Dec. 31. The 44-year-old Chudzinski said he will target former San Diego Chargers coach Norv Turner to be his offensive coordinator.

Jaguars fire coach

The Jacksonville Jaguars have fired head coach Mike Mularkey after only one season at the helm.

Mularkey, whose team went 2-14 last year, becomes the eighth NFL coach fired since the end of the 2012 season. Andy Reid, who was fired by the Philadelphia Eagles, was subsequently hired by the Kansas City Chiefs.
