Rule changes due in Westport fishing

Anglers will be allowed to retain hatchery and coho salmon in ocean waters off Westport and Ilwaco beginning Saturday, the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife reported.

Also effective Saturday, anglers fishing off Westport will be allowed to retain only one coho as part of their two-salmon daily limit. The coho catch limit off Ilwaco will remain two fish.

Coastal anglers initially were limited to hatchery coho (marked with a missing adipose fin) to ensure the department would meet conservation goals for wild coho while allowing for a full salmon fishing season.

With a month remaining in the fishery, however, only 25 percent of the coho quota has been reached in both the Westport and Ilwaco areas, Fish & Wildlife spokesmen reported.

The ocean salmon fishery is expected to continue through Sept. 23 off Westport and through Sept. 30 off Ilwaco.
