GHC’s Brown wins tourney at Chambers Bay
Grays Harbor College’s Casey Brown fired a brilliant 69 to earn medalist honors in the Swanson Cup men’s and women’s golf tournament last weekend at Chambers Bay.
A sophomore from Rosalia, Brown shot a career-best round on the course that will host the 2015 U.S. Open. He shot five birdies and an eagle to beat his nearest rival by five strokes. The highlight of his round was an eagle 2 on the 10th hole, where he holed a wedge shot from 120 yards. No other GHC golfer broke 100.
Centralia’s Megan Shultz was the women’s medalist with an 88. Bellevue’s men and Green River’s women took team honors.
Elma facilities meeting set for 5 p.m. today
A facilities meeting over the new stadium in Elma is scheduled for 5 p.m. today at the Elma High School library.
Eagle JVs beat Hoquiam
Elma topped Hoquiam, 34-18, in a junior varsity football game Monday at Elma.
Ira Hartford, Tristan Robinette and Liam Baxter were credited with fine performances for the Eagles.
Brody Bennett scored two Hoquiam touchdowns, on an 80-yard run and a 90-yard kickoff return. Bubba Dick hit Anthony Nash on a 25-yard scoring pass in the fourth quarter. Hoquiam coaches cited Nash and Ryan Espedal for all-around play and Artimus Johnson and Seth Carlyle for defense.
Monte JVs crush Rochester
Kylar Prante scored twice, once on a punt return in which he broke two tackles, to help Montesano trounce Rochester, 54-0, in a junior varsity football game Monday at Rochester.
Kyle Englund, Jake Herzog, Tanner Birdsall, Jacob Izatt and Connor Lovell also scored for the Bulldogs. Montesano’s defense allowed only two first downs.
Red-card mass protest leads to fines
Seattle Sounders FC has been fined $5,000, and coach Sigi Schmid was fined an additional $1,000 by the MLS Disciplinary Committee for violation of the league’s mass confrontation policy.
The incident occurred Sunday in the 74th minute of Seattle’s 1-0 loss at Portland. Sounders midfielder Osvaldo Alonso received a straight red card for elbowing Timbers midfielder Will Johnson, and several Sounders surrounded referee Hilario Grajeda to dispute the call.
