Elma Babe Ruth meeting set

An Elma Babe Ruth League meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Sunday in the Elma High School commons.

Topics will include the nomination of officers and coaches, registration and tryouts for the upcoming season. Additional coaches and volunteers are being sought. Those interested in serving in those capacities are encouraged to attend.

New class for racing hall of fame named

Six people — four drivers and two visionaries — will be welcomed to the Elma Auto Racing Hall of Fame as the Class of 2013 on March 16 in Elma.

The new class will be: drivers Ken Stearns, Rick Leighty, Tom Williams and Dan West, and contributors Dick Morlan and Tom Neff.

The drivers span several decades of racing at Elma and the contributors were instramental in bringing new cars, safety features and improved facilities to the Elma raceway. All six were nominated by Elma race fans and observers for the organization, which was established to preserve and honor the history of auto racing in Gras Harbor.

The fifth annual EARHoF Induction Ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. on March 16 at the Elma Eagles.

Mountain West forms divisions, title game

The Mountain West Conference announced on Tuesday the formation of two football divisions and a conference championship game, which will begin in the 2013-14 season.

Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, New Mexico, Utah State and Wyoming will play in the Mountain Division and Fresno State, Hawaii, Nevada, San Diego State, San Jose State and UNLV will play in the West Division. Each team will play five divisional games and three cross-divisional contests annually. The actual rotational sequence and matchups will be developed via computer scheduling models.

The division winners will then play in the inaugural Mountain West Football Championship game on Dec. 7, 2013, in the home stadium of the team with the highest BCS ranking.
