Sports Roundup: Montesano sweeps up Rochester in volleyball

MONTESANO — Montesano took control early and cruised to a 25-9, 25-12, 25-13 victory over Rochester in Evergreen 1A play on Wednesday.

Jordan Spradlin led the Bulldogs (9-1, 11-1) with 11 kills and four solo blocks. Myranda Floch added 10 kills, Ambi Howell dished out 15 assists, five aces and 100 percent serving (20-for-20). Megan Choate added seven assists and eight digs and Madi Studer brought up 10 digs.

“I thought we did a good job of trying to run new things when we had the opportunity,” Montesano head coach Debbie Gibson said. “We passed the ball well, took care of things on our side of the net. We played well at times, but we do need to pick the intensity up.”

Montesano won the junior varsity match in three sets.

On Tuesday, Montesano hosts Elma on Senior Night.

Evergreen 2A meet

TUMWATER — Freshman Kyle Hurd earned all-league honors with a seventh place finish during Tuesday’s Evergreen 2A meet at Pioneer Park in Tumwater.

There were no eliminations and all teams will participate in next Saturday’s District IV 2A meet at Lewisville Park in Battle Ground.

Hurd was the top Bobcat in the meet, cracking the 17-minute barrier at 16:57. The top-10 individual finishers earned all-league distinction.

“That was something we’ve been working on,” AHS head coach Sherrie Green said of the 17-minute barrier.

Highline in three

DES MOINES — Highline smacked down 47 kills and kept Grays Harbor College on the defensive in a 25-11, 25-18, 25-13 NWAACC Western Division win on Wednesday night.

The Thunderbirds outhit the Chokers, 47-15, in kills. Kendra Weiler and Heather Dublanko shared the lead with four kills each for GHC (0-8, 8-18).

Alex Bergeson dished out three service aces and Weiler brought up 11 digs.

On Friday, GHC will stay home to greet Green River.
