After scoring in double figures in their first two games, Aberdeen’s girls could not get their bats to heat up against Tumwater on a chilly Tuesday afternoon at the Bishop Athletic Complex.
The reigning Evergreen 2A Conference champion T-Birds gained momentum from a couple of Aberdeen fielding errors, and rode a strong pitching performance by Liz Smith to a 10-2 softball victory.
Tumwater’s offense was ignited in the third inning when Caitlyn Churchill hit a double deep into left-center field. Churchill then scored on a line drive single by Gabby Vaddllion.
Kaylene Glasgo followed that up with an infield single, advancing Vaddllion to second base. The runners advanced on a passed ball, setting up a two-run single by Alexa McDaniel for a 3-1 Tumwater lead.
Still up 3-1 in the top of the fourth, the T-Birds took advantage of a couple of Bobcats miscues, and scored two unearned security runs. Smith reached base on a dropped fly ball in the outfield, then scored on a line-drive single by Churchill. Churchill then scored on when Vaddllion’s pop fly into right field was misplayed.
“We didn’t adjust to what was coming at us, and our inexperience came through today” said Timmons. “A couple of plays in the outfield got to us, and helped Tumwater get on a roll. They are a good team and they took advantage of that. We did not adjust to the high fastball. (Smith) pitches a lot of rise balls, and we just got underneath of them, and hit a lot of pop flies today. Our motto is ‘put the ball in play, and make them make the plays.’ Today (Tumwater) made the plays.”
Smith pitched all seven innings for Tumwater, and allowed only six hits.
The game started well for Aberdeen. Shannon Chesterman led off the bottom of the first inning with a walk, stole second base and advanced to third on a bunt base hit by Kiana Dixon. Chesterman then scored when McDaniel, Tumwater’s catcher, threw out Kiana Dixon attempting to steal second base.
Aberdeen pitcher Mo Donovan allowed only one hit in the first two innings, as the Bobcats (2-1) carried a 1-0 lead into the third inning. Donovan ended up allowing five earned runs in 5 1/3 innings of work.
Kiana Dixon scored Aberdeen’s only other run on a bases-loaded infield single by Heather Dublanko in the fifth inning.
The Bobcats will not have to wait long for another shot at the T-Birds. Tumwater will host Aberdeen on Thursday.
