ELMA — Long-range shooting kept Elma in the game for much of the first half, but in the end Tenino’s tough defense accompanied by its efficient offense helped the Beavers roll over the Eagles, 66-48, in Evergreen 1A play on Tuesday night.
Halfway through the second quarter, Elma junior guard Ryan Collin capped off a 9-1 run by hitting a mid-range jump shot to cut Tenino’s lead to 29-25. Ray Stark scored six of his team-high 19 points during that stretch, both on 3-pointers. Stark connected on five shots from beyond the arc in the game.
The Eagles hit six of their 12 3-point attempts in the first half, which accounted for all but two of their field goals.
“We made a run, and we played well in segments,” Elma head coach Marvin Prince said. “We did some decent things, but unfortunately we couldn’t cover them and we made too many turnovers. Turnovers killed us.”
The Eagles (2-6 in league, 2-12 overall) committed 22 turnovers in the game, compared to only 10 by the Beavers.
Tenino controlled the remainder of the second quarter. Led by Mac Shaw’s only four points of the game, the Beavers (8-0, 12-3) finished the half on a 9-0 run that stretched their lead to 38-25.
As if a 13-point halftime lead was not enough, Tenino opened the second half on a 12-0 run to extended its lead to 50-25. Devante Harris scored 10 points during that stretch. After a relatively quiet first half, the senior guard scored 13 of his game-high 20 points in the third quarter.
“In the third quarter, we came out with no effort,” said Prince. “For most of the game, we played with effort, but no sense of urgency. We competed for most of the game, but our effort was not there in the third quarter.”
Tenino’s offense was hot from the beginning of the game. Justin Conklin nailed the first three shot attempts of the game for Tenino, two treys and a mid-range jump shot from the left wing. Conklin also capped of the Beavers’ 23-point first quarter with a 3-pointer. Conklin finished the contest with 14 points, all in the first half.
The Eagles will take the short trip to Aberdeen on Saturday to face the Bobcats.
