CHEHALIS — Three Twin Harbors small-school athletes walked off Chehalis High School’s stadium on Saturday afternoon with championship titles around their necks after the annual Chehalis Activators track meet.
Wishkah’s Keigan Gardiner and North Beach’s Caleb Bridge and Crystal Lynch won one event each, with Gardiner resetting a school record in the process.
Gardiner, a junior, won the 110-meter high hurdles at 15.89 seconds, bettering the previous school record of 16.1 set by Ben Clark in 2009. The Logger got some competition from Rochester’s Cody Triana, who helped push him throughout the race.
“Keigan was about 2-3 steps ahead of him; it was a really nice race for both,” Wishkah head coach Bob Eager said. “He works hard, has good grades. He’s a nice kid and I’m happy for him. Overall, the meet was good for the kids. It was a great weekend.”
Bridge finished the day with two top-three finishes, including a victory in the discus with a toss of 139-1. He took third in the shot put at 43-2 1/2, the best out of any small-school competitor.
Lynch grabbed two top-four finishes and easily claimed a win in the shot put by more than 2 feet at 36-1. In the discus, Lynch was fourth at 95-0.
Raymond came away with a basket of medals, led by Hannah Dykes’ three top-four finishes (fourth, 100m; third, long jump; and fourth, triple jump). The Gulls’ Ally Phansisay scratches on his final two jumps to finish second in the triple jump, with teammate Rayce Newman third.
Newman also ran in the top five in the 100 and 200m sprints.
“If any of the two (scratched) jumps were in, (Ally) would have been right there in contention,” Raymond head coach Mike Tully said. “The kids were a little dead from the night before. The Friday (non-qualifiers) meet went long. It was a pretty good day.”
On Thursday, Wishkah, North Beach, Raymond and Ocosta will travel to the Naselle Invitational.
