Turnovers doom Hyaks in 66-29 loss to Napavine

ROCHESTER — Napavine established its zone press defense against North Beach and harvested a bushel of turnovers to take over this District IV 2B girls basketball opening round contest on Wednesday.

The Tigers pulled away late in the first quarter and held the Hyaks to just six points in the second and third quarters to secure a 66-29 victory.

Demi Sahlinger led all scorers with 19 points for Napavine, with Josie Dekoker adding 14 points. Wakeena DeLaCruz led North Beach (10-11) with 15 points, eight rebounds and three blocks.

“Midway through the first quarter, we were matching them basket-for-basket,” North Beach head coach Peter Fry said. “They kept a nice zone press on us and we started turning the ball over, heavily. Once we did that, the points piled up for them.”

On Tuesday, North Beach will take on the loser of the South Bend-Onalaska quarterfinal game in a loser-out contest at 6:30 p.m. at Montesano.
