TUKWILA — Two Grays Harbor teams captured state Recreational Cup soccer championships last weekend in Tukwila.
The Harbor Crushers lived up to their name by walloping the Tracyton Bombers, 7-1, in the boys U-18/19 title match Sunday at the Starfire Soccer Complex. They had advanced to the title round with a 3-2 win over the Federal Way Thunder.
The Harbor Sounders concluded a dominent defensive performance throughout the boys U-14 tournament with shutouts in the semifinals and finals Saturday.
The Sounders blanked Nortac Cobras, 4-0, in the semifinals and the VUSA All-Stars, 1-0, in the title match. The Harborites outscored their opposition, 22-1, in postseason play.
Five Sounders were named to the Best XI all-tournament team. They included Cesar Corona, Kyle Hurd, Jesse Paik, Ryan Solan and Miguel Torres.
Two other Grays Harbor teams lost in the semifinals. The Montesano Renegades fell in a penalty-kick shootout to the Hawks from the Tacoma area after regulation play ended scoreless in the girls U-13 semis. The Hawks, interestingly, won the tournament without scoring a goal in regulation time Saturday. They also won the title match in a shootout following a 0-0 regulation period.
The J’97 Lightning beat the Harbor Youth Soccer Club Chivas, 4-0, in the boys U-15 semis.
