Uncle Ray’s Raspberry: A rough start for the Old Sport

As you may have noticed, there was one game yesterday that the Old Sport made it a point not to pick – namely the one involving one school’s varsity playing another’s JV.

There were three reasons for that. We make it a point not to pick JV games; it was played on Thursday, and we’d have had no idea of how to pick it.

We have enough trouble with the varsity tiffs, especially during the early season when we don’t have much of a line on anybody.

At least we wound up on the right side of .500 last week with 5 right and 4 wrong. That’s pretty well short of our own Mendoza line of .700, but we don’t expect to be there for a few more weeks.

We’d just about settle for an even split on these.

HOQUIAM at ABERDEEN: Looking at last week’s results, there’s really only one way to call it. Bobcats can take hope in the fact we’ve been wrong on this one for at least the past two or three years…GRIZZLIES 28, BOBCATS 8.

ELMA at EATONVILLE: Both looking to rebound from opening week losses. Eagles were at least ahead late in their game, so we’ll pick them to stay the distance this time…EAGLES 24, CRUISERS 20.

RAYMOND at CHARLES WRIGHT: Gulls still trying to pick on the bigger schools. Prospects don’t look much better this time…TARRIERS 34, GULLS 20.

NORTH BEACH at SOUTH BEND: Two more clubs trying to get well after opening-week displeasure…HYAKS 20, TRIBE 13.

WISHKAH at TAHOLAH: Loggers probably are frustrated after last week’s opponent forfeited, costing them a likely win. Taholah licking wounds inflicted last week by the defending state champs. On its home turf, Taholah gets the nod…CHITWHINS 38, LOGGERS 34.

MONTESANO vs. CASCADE CHRISTIAN at Sumner: Christians have been state finalists four straight years and won the title two years ago. But they suffered an astounding 39-0 defeat last week to Cashmere. Whatever — there’s no way we were about to pick against a team that beat Aberdeen 38-0 a week earlier…BULLDOGS 20, COUGARS 14.

LAKE QUINAULT at CRESCENT: Shorthanded Elks pulled off an impressive win last week. It’ll probably be even tougher this week at Joyce…LOGGERS 40, ELKS 34.
