Willapa Valley’s Connor McAllister came from behind to win the individual championship at the District IV Class B Boys Golf Tournament on Wednesday at Highland Golf Course in Cosmopolis.
With a final-round 80, McAllister finished with a 36-hole total of 166. He finished one stroke ahead of Wahkiakum’s Bryson Coleman.
Wahkiakum swept second through seventh places. Valley’s Nicholas Betrozoff claimed the district’s eighth and final state berth with an 89-88 — 177.
State Class B competition begins Tuesday at Oakbrook Golf Course in Lakewood.
McAllister started the day five strokes behind Coleman, the first-round leader.
Wahkiakum’s Brook Calvert, McAllister’s playing partner, took the lead on the second nine of the final round. But McAllister overtook him when he rolled in a 12-foot birdie putt on the 14th hole and Calvert double-bogeyed the same hole.
“That was the big swing and he played lights out the rest of the way,” Willapa Harbor coach Dave Lund said of McAllister.
A couple other Willapa Harbor golfers had noteworthy final rounds. South Bend’s Zane Johnson carded a 92, his best-ever 18-hole score. Raymond freshman Nicholas Topping shot an 89 yesterday.
“That was phenomenal for a kid who started golf at the beginning of the year,” Lund noted.
Lund also cited the play of North Beach’s Jordan Chong, who survived the 18-hole cut despite spending the bulk of spring sports playing baseball.
