Wishkah boys lose to Columbia Adventist

MONTESANO — An early scoring drought and a significant size disadvantage was too much for Wishkah’s boys to overcome.

Opening the game with a 16-0 run, Columbia Adventist beat the Loggers, 72-54, in a Bi-District Class 1B Boys Basketball Tournament loser out match-up at Bo Griffith Memorial Gym in Montesano on Saturday.

Wishkah finished its season one win shy of regionals at 14-8.

Josh Rodriguez hit two 3-pointers, and Josh Fry added five points during Columbia Adventist’s game-opening stretch.

A free throw and a trey by Brady Anderson got Wishkah (14-8) on the scoreboard and briefly interrupted Columbia’s run. However, Rodriguez went right back to work, and scored seven points during another 16-0 run that gave the Kodiaks a 32-4 lead early in the second quarter.

Rodriguez ended up hitting four shots from beyond the arc, all in the first half, and led all scorers with 26 points.

The Loggers fought hard to stay in the game, and a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Jace Anderson capped off an 11-0 run that cut the Kodiaks’ lead to 41-26 at halftime. Jace Anderson scored five points, and Ethen Arnold added four during that stretch.

“They came out with a lot of energy early, and we really didn’t match it,” Wishkah head coach Matt Ferrier said. “We didn’t hit a lot of shots, missed some free throws, and got down by 20 plus points. That was gut check time, and in the last three quarters we really battled. That team will leave knowing that we can definitely play with them, but we came out flat, and not ready to play.”

Although Wishkah’s offense was clicking in the game’s final three quarters, the Loggers struggled to stop the offense of the much larger Kodiaks down the stretch. Three of Columbia Adventist’s starters are listed as 6-2 or taller: The 6-2 Rodriguez, 6-3 David Irias and 6-6 Fry. The trio of big men scored 52 of the Kodiaks’ 72 points.

Trey Berge, at 6-3, is the lone Logger listed as taller than 6-2.

Brady Anderson turned in an impressive offensive performance, and paced Wishkah with 20 points. The junior guard was the only Logger to score in double figures.
