Montesano clinches league title with 4-1 win over Tenino

MONTESANO — Montesano turned in a championship-clinching performance in the sun on Monday afternoon at Vessey Field.

Starting pitcher Matthew Jensen threw a complete-game four-hitter, the Bulldog bats were swinging and the defense was good enough as Montesano clinched the Evergreen 1A title with a 4-1 victory over Tenino.

Montesano (14-0, 15-0) still has four league games to play over the next week before work begins in the District IV 1A tournament.

“For us, it is important to keep playing hard, working hard and play one game at a time,” Montesano head coach Mike Bruner said. “Jensen pitched a fantastic game. He was on, had his hard-biting breaking ball going and he hit his spots.”

Shad Rogers led Monte with two hits, both of them doubles, and an RBI. Tucker Ibabao, Layne Bruner and Jensen also had RBI hits. Bruner slugged a solo home run to right field in the fourth inning for the Bulldogs’ big fly.

Coach Bruner cited catcher Jordan Bussard for his work behind the plate, which included throwing out two base runners at second.

Today, Montesano stays home to take on Forks.
