TUMWATER — Scoring the winning run on a wild pitch, Black Hills outlasted Aberdeen in eight innings, 3-2, in an Evergreen 2A Conference baseball game Friday at Tumwater.
After a dandy pitching duel between Aberdeen’s Collin Nord and Black Hills’ Austin Lee resulted in a 2-all standoff through regulation, the Wolves struck quickly in the bottom of the eighth.
A fly to right-center dropped for a leadoff triple when the Bobcats were unable to gain traction in the muddy outfield. Charlie Dietrich’s first pitch to the next batter went awry, bringing the runner home from third.
Limited to four hits, the Bobcats (0-1, 0-2) effectively utilized hit-and-run plays to overcome a 2-0 deficit in the sixth.
Devan Harke’s perfectly executed hit-and-run single sent Dietrich to third base, where he scored on Ashton Williamson’s sacrifice fly.
With Harke on the move, Nord also singled to right field to again put runners on first and third. Harke tallied the tying run on a wild pitch.
“We were really flat,” Bobcat coach Shon Schreiber said. “We didn’t show up and get excited until the sixth inning. We have to get started earlier. But like I told the kids, there’s no reason to panic. We’re only 1 1/2 games into the (league) season.”
The Bobcats will travel to Chehalis on Monday, first completing a rain-suspended contest that they lead 4-1 before facing the Bearcats again in a regularly-scheduled contest.
